Reading, MA—This fall, LiveWires returns with a monthly in-person series featuring speakers on a range of tantalizing topics that will delight, surprise, and educate.

We’re kicking off on September 9 when Jane Parks Gardener joins us for LiveWires: The Wreck of the Circus Ship Royal Tar, an in-person author’s talk about one of New England’s most haunting maritime disasters.

In 1836, the steamship Royal Tar embarked from New Brunswick heading towards Portland, Maine, with a passenger manifest that included exotic birds, two lionesses, a Bengal tiger, and an Asian elephant. Jane Parks Gardner retraces the Royal Tar’s journey from Saint John, New Brunswick, through Eastport,

Maine, and down to the waters off Vinalhaven, where the ship met its end. Books will be available for purchase and inscription. Register by scanning the code or online: https://readingpl.libnet.info/event/14269284
