Reading Police Issue Charges in Connection with Fatal Car Crash

READING — Chief David Clark reports that the Reading Police Department, with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision and Accident Reconstruction Section (CARS) and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, have completed the investigation into a four-car crash that resulted in the death of one individual.

As a result, NASHASON MUTUGI, AGE 26, of READING, has been charged with:

  • Motor Vehicle Homicide
  • Failure to Stop
  • Marked Lanes Violation
  • Unsafe Passing

In May, Reading Police responded to a serious four-car motor vehicle crash on Main Street (Route 28). A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of a 2006 Volvo, identified as MUTUGI, ran a red light at the intersection of Main Street and Hopkins Street. The Volvo struck the driver’s side door of a 2014 green Ford Fusion that was traveling eastbound on Hopkins Street.

The driver of the Ford was pronounced dead at the scene.

At a show cause hearing held today before the clerk magistrate in Woburn District Court, probable cause was found to issue a criminal complaint for the charges in connection with this crash. MUTUGI is scheduled to be arraigned in Woburn District Court on October 8.

Reading Police express their condolences to the crash victim’s family. Reading Police have been working closely with the family and a victim-witness advocate during this process.

Reading Police would like to thank Massachusetts State Police CARS and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in this ongoing and deeply involved investigation.

“It’s vital that we investigate serious incidents thoroughly, especially when a life is lost, in the best interests of justice,” Chief Clark said. “Thank you to our community for its patience.”
