Reading’s Jennifer Cummings Hillery Honored at Speak for Thyself Awards

Local advocate and public speaking coach recognized alongside national leaders for empowering communities and preserving legacy of Mayflower’s Priscilla Alden

Reading, MA — The Alden Kindred of America’s 18th annual Speak for Thyself Awards recognized three extraordinary women who embody the spirit of Mayflower passenger Priscilla Mullins Alden—leading the way in their communities with bold voices and impactful action. Among this year’s honorees was Reading resident Jennifer Cummings Hillery, celebrated for her contributions to public speaking, advocacy, and community engagement.

The awards dinner also honored Michele Pecoraro of Plympton, a leader in cultural tourism and non-profit administration, and Kimberly Phipps-Nichol of Houston, Texas, a leader is community revitalization and urban redevelopment. The awards event was held in May at the Jones River Trading Post in Kingston.

A familiar name in Reading, Hillery, is the Co-Founder of Redwood Speaking LLC, which helps empower people to master public speaking through the art of storytelling and advocacy. Drawing on her extensive experience as a trial attorney, she helps clients overcome stage fright, craft compelling narratives, and command an audience with confidence.

Her ability to engage and inspire is well-documented—not just in courtrooms, but also on the stage. A Moth StorySLAM winner, she showcased her storytelling prowess on GBH’s “Stories from the Stage.” Her career began in law, where she earned the Justice Ruth Abrams Award as an Assistant District Attorney for her outstanding contributions. A graduate of Skidmore College and Northeastern University School of Law, Hillery continues to serve her community as an elected Town Meeting Member since 2015 and is a proud member of the Alden Kindred.

The Alden Kindred of America, steward of the Alden House Historic Site in Duxbury, welcomes visitors from around the world to explore the legacy of John and Priscilla Alden through guided tours and educational programs.
