“Reading Folk Dancing” Brings Neighbors Together Through Music and Movement

Community-led dance series draws strong turnout and sets the stage for an expanded fall season

Reading, MA — April 2025 — Over the past several months, a growing number of Reading residents have been stepping out—literally—to enjoy a lively series of folk dancing events that celebrate culture, community, and connection.

Kicking off in January and February, the initial series of four events was sponsored by the Reading Public Library’s LiveWires program. Building on the enthusiasm generated, a second series of six events was organized by local community members affiliated with the Reading Neighbors Network and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Reading. These gatherings have taken place in the Fellowship Hall of the Unitarian Church, drawing 15–20 attendees at each session.

The events have been led by  Marcie Van Cleave, the Folk Arts Director of the Folk Arts Center of New England, based in Stoneham. A seasoned folk dance instructor, Van Cleave brings decades of experience and joy to the floor, welcoming dancers of all skill levels.

“There’s something special about moving together in rhythm,” said one participant. “It builds bonds across generations and backgrounds—plus, it’s just plain fun!”

Organizers are now working on plans to continue the series this fall under the working title Reading Folk Dancing. They hope to make this a regular community tradition that introduces more local residents to the joys of international folk dance and communal celebration.

A photo from the final spring event, held this past Tuesday, captures the energy and smiles that have come to define the series. Organizers are exploring ways to spread the word further and invite more members of the Reading community to join in future sessions.
