Phyllis M. Loubier of Reading, Massachusetts, passed away on January 22, 2025, in Manchester, New Hampshire. Phyllis was born in Thorndike, Maine, on May 1, 1933, to Althea V. Gardiner Lasselle and William A. Lasselle, Jr.
Phyllis grew up in Unity, Maine with her younger sister Dolores who survives her in Augusta, Maine. Phyllis excelled at basketball, swimming, singing, and academics, graduating salutatorian of Unity High School in 1951. She worked at Bear Spring Camps during the summers. The family had a camp on Unity Pond. She was recruited to study at Fisher Junior College in Boston starting in 1951. Phyllis met her future husband Eugene E. Loubier of Waterville, Maine at a YMCA dance in Boston. After graduation in 1953, Phyllis moved to Waterville, Maine, where she was the executive secretary to the president of Scott Paper Company while Gene served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955. Gene and Phyllis were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Waterville in 1955 They were married for 66 years and had three children, Gregg, Randy, and Jane, who survive her.
Phyllis and Gene lived in Worcester, Massachusetts while Phyllis worked at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Gene studied for a bachelor’s degree in business from Clark University. Sons Gregg and Randy were born in Worcester. Phyllis and Gene moved to Waterville, Maine in 1961, where daughter Jane was born. The family lived in Rumford, Maine from 1964 through 1973 in a beautiful home where Phyllis raised the children and entertained friends and family. From 1970 to 1971, the family took a break from Rumford and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where Gene studied for a masters degree. Phyllis, with Gene’s help, turned the year in Minnesota into a family adventure by touring sights, cities, small towns, and national parks in 40 states from coast-to-coast in a small Dodge camper van with a pet rabbit named Robbie.
Phyllis and Gene lived in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and in Greenfield, Massachusetts from 1973 until 1985. Phyllis and Gene traveled around the world in 1984 on a “People to People” tour to visit health care facilities in China, Russia and Lithuania. They lived for over 35 years in Reading, Massachusetts. Phyllis sang with a women’s barbershop quartet called the Sweet Adelines. For many years, Phyllis and Gene gathered with family and friends at their vacation home on Lake Horace in Weare, New Hampshire, where Phyllis enjoyed having family, the grandchildren and friends at the lake. Phyllis and Gene created and cared for beautiful gardens of flowers, tomatoes, cucumbers and raspberries in Reading and Weare.
After Gene passed in 2021, Phyllis moved to assisted living in Haverhill, Massachusetts and then to Manchester, New Hampshire. Phyllis is survived by sister Dolores Parent and niece Lisa Parent both of Augusta, Maine, Gregg and his wife Leslie of Altadena, California, and grandchildren Marilyn and Joe; son Randy and his wife Judy of New Boston, New Hampshire, and grandchildren Tori, Danny, Zach, Lauren, Gabe, and Mitch; daughter Jane Epstein and her husband Mark of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and grandchildren Gavin and Jeremy; and their great grandchildren.
Burial will take place in the spring at St. Francis Cemetery, 78 Grove Street, Waterville, Maine.
