Gertrude “Trudy” Ann Jefferson Hummel passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Monday, Dec. 30, 2024. She was 91 years old.
Trudy was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, who died in 2018. Survivors include her four children: Jeff (Ellen) Hummel of Wilmette, Ill.; Jim (Nancy) Hummel of Virginia Beach, Va.; Joe (Marybeth Lore) Hummel of Wilmette, Ill.; and Susan (Douglas) Mattia-Riggs, of Findlay, Ohio.
Trudy leaves seven grandchildren: Sara Hummel and Evan Hummel; Jason (Veronica) Hummel and Justin Hummel; Dai-lin Hummel; and AJ (Kristen) Mattia and Beth (Nate McMaster, fiancée) Mattia; as well as three step-grandchildren: Britton (Rachel) Riggs; Bryce (Allison) Riggs; and Brock (Tonia) Riggs. Also surviving are one great-grandchild, Jayston Hummel, and three step-great-grandchildren: Brooklyn Riggs, Adylyn Grine, and Aiden Grine.
Trudy was born on March 19, 1933, in Reading, Mass. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Colby College, where she was awarded Phi Beta Kappa honors. She subsequently earned her elementary teaching certificate from Glassboro State College.
She met her husband, Henry, at Colby, and they were married in 1956. Trudy first worked in the US State Department helping to settle European refugees. A firm believer in lifelong education, she later established the first nursery school in Ocean City, NJ, teaching there for many years before joining the emergency room staff at Shore Memorial Hospital in Somers Point, NJ. She lived with her family in Ocean City, NJ for almost 30 years before moving to be near her daughter, eventually residing in Tiffin and most recently Findlay, Ohio. She enjoyed riding her bike, gardening, reading, watching wildlife, and caring for her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Trudy was preceded in death by her brother, the Rev. Milton Jefferson, and his wife Shirley, of Syracuse, NY, and her parents, Milton and Martha Jefferson, of Reading, Mass.
