Obituary: Robert C. Mahoney, 68

Robert “Bob” Charles Mahoney, World War II Veteran and a resident of Reading for 68 years, passed peacefully at his home on December 22, 2024. He was 98 years of age. Bob was born in his childhood home, in Brookline, Massachusetts on May 9, 1926, the son of the late Thomas F. and Freda M. (Carlton) Mahoney.

At the age of 18, Bob served in World War II and was a Purple Heart recipient. After graduating from Northeastern University, he was an accountant at MIT where he met his wife, Eleanor. In 1958, Bob joined The MITRE Corporation finance office and helped shape the newly formed company until he retired in 1991 as their Secretary Treasurer Senior Vice President Chief Financial Officer.

Bob was the beloved husband of the late Eleanor M. “Ellie” (Maguire) Mahoney for 55 years. He was a devoted and loving father to Kevin T. Mahoney and his wife Edy of Burlington, Brian G. Mahoney and his wife Carole, Anne Kinteris and her husband Christopher of Reading, and Robert C. Mahoney, Jr. and his husband Greg Condakes of Ogunquit, ME. Bob, or “Pa,” as everyone lovingly referred to him, was truly devoted to his nine grandchildren, Nicholas, Caitlin, Megan, Jade, Jamie, Chloe, Keegan, Shane, and Phoenix. Over the years, he watched each grow up, celebrating sports games, piano recitals, and big wins of card games at the family table. In these last five years he has enjoyed his weekly Pa-ventures exploring the sights in our local communities.

Bob is reunited with Ellie, his parents, and siblings Carlton Mahoney, Evelyn Cohen, Phyllis Cusick, Joseph Mahoney and Francis X. Mahoney.

Bob’s funeral will be held at the Douglass, Edgerley, and Bessom Funeral Home, 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St) Reading on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at 9:00am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Agnes Church 186 Woburn St. Reading at 10:00am. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Reading. Funeral Home visiting hours will be Friday from 4:00-8:00pm.
