Just to mention a few benefits, it’s been shown to strengthen muscles, lower risk of heart disease, and improve balance.
Reading Elder Services had these benefits in mind when it applied for and received a “Keep Moving” grant in 2016 to set up a walking group for Reading Seniors. They tapped the Walkable Reading Committee for a volunteer walk leader to get things started and the Reading Ramblers program became official that November. Walkable’s Ace Foulds remains as the leader today.
With the exception of the Covid months and a remarkably few weather-related cancellations, the Ramblers have been walking the neighborhoods of Reading and nearby communities ever since.
Regular attendees note many additional benefits. Lots of information is shared, be it local politics, events, life experiences, or leads on hiring professionals for jobs around the house. Erline Trites walks around her neighborhood on her own most days but says she enjoys walking with the Ramblers in neighborhoods she wouldn’t ordinarily visit. Sharon Thomas was a walk leader in the early days. Since retiring from her job at the Pleasant St. Center, she has become a frequent walker. They, and many others, also appreciate the conversations and camaraderie in the group.
Pleasantries publishes the schedule a month in advance, and all are welcome to show up at the appointed meeting spot on Tuesday at 10. Reading Ramblers’ Facebook page also has the whole month at a glance, as well as up-to-date changes. There is no fee, and you can come as often or as seldom as you, please.
