Reading, MA—Nature, health, and sustainability come into focus at the Reading Public Library beginning this month, thanks to a generous federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant. Rooted in Reading is devoted to intergenerational learning about everything from gardening to green living. You’ll be seeing new programs, updates to our green spaces outside (and inside!), as well as highlights from our established collections in gardening, nature, and more.
We’re excited to give you a peek at what’s happening beneath the surface this fall for Rooted in Reading and what to expect for the coming year.
- On the patio off the Children’s Room, Plant Lab (for grades 3-5) gives kids hands-on experience saving seeds and carving pumpkins on October 25. Once the growing season is done, it’s on to houseplants!
- Kicking off a range of Community Swaps, we’ll hold a Puzzle Swap on Saturday afternoon, November 2.
- And as we approach December, don’t forget to check out our Seed Library if you’d like to set up some winter sowing.
- You’ll also see work on our sensory garden and native plant beds beginning this month around the front entrance and driveway – there will be signs to help identify what emerges as we get into 2025 and beyond.
Keep an eye out for our new Rooted in Reading logo that indicates a program, collection or item related to the initiative.
Rooted in Reading is made possible by grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Additional support is provided by the Friends of the Reading Public Library and the Reading Public Library Foundation.
