Obituary: Charles B. Herrick, 85

November 19, 1938 – June 23, 2024

Charles B. Herrick, 85, a longtime resident of Reading, passed away at the Thomas Upham House in Medfield on Sunday morning, June 23. He was the husband of the late Bernice M. (Lally) Herrick.

Born in Wisconsin and raised in Melrose, he was the son of the late Marjorie (Mosher) Herrick. Charles (known by his family and friends as “Chuck”) was a graduate of Melrose High School, and went on to earn a degree in engineering from Northeastern University.

Charles spent most of his career with GTE & Verizon, where he received multiple patents. He retired in 1995. He was a longtime member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Reading. Charles enjoyed camping and spending time at Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunk, Maine over the years. He loved all of the Boston sports teams, and he was an avid Boston Red Sox fan.

Charles was a longtime member of the Good Samaritan Masonic Lodge in Reading. He was heavily involved with his kids and grandkids sports and activities, and he loved spending time with his family.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife, the late Bernice (Lally) Herrick. He is survived by his two sons, Douglas Herrick and his wife Doris of Waltham, and Jeffrey Herrick and his wife Jill of Medfield; and six grandchildren, Kayla, Ryan, Kendall, Matthew, Charles, and Kacey. Charles is also survived by one sister, Evelyn Thornton of Peabody, and he was preceded in death by one sister, the late Joyce Moore.

Visiting hours will be at the Douglass, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home, 25 Sanborn St. (cor. of Woburn St.) Reading on Friday, June 28 from 10:00am-12:00pm, followed by at funeral service at the funeral home at 12:00 Noon. Burial will be at the Wood End Cemetery in Reading. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Charles’ memory may be made to the Jimmy Fund, c/o Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O.
