Obituary: Arvid D. Swanson, 82

July 22, 1941 – June 20, 2024

Arvid D. Swanson, a retired educator and longtime resident of Reading, passed away after a short illness on Thursday morning, June 20, 2024. He was 82 years of age.

Born in Medford, and raised in Malden, he was the son of the late Arvid M., and the late Elizabeth (Lorden) Swanson; and he was the loving husband of Rita (Doherty) Swanson.

Mr. Swanson was a proud graduate of Malden Catholic High School, and he went on to earn his Master’s Degree from Syracuse University. He was a Social Studies teacher at Malden High School for over 35 years, retiring in 2002.

Mr. Swanson also coached the Malden High School hockey team, and golf team. He was an avid Notre Dame Football fan. Arvid and his wife Rita enjoyed traveling to Europe and elsewhere.

In addition to his wife Rita, Arvid is survived by one son, David A. Swanson and his wife Julie of Reading; one daughter, Elizabeth J. Connelly and her husband Timothy of Wilmington; and he was preceded in death by one son, the late Brian J. Swanson. Arvid is also survived by his daughter-in-law Kathleen Swanson of Westborough and her husband Eric Fitch; four grandchildren, David, Brady, and Meredith Swanson, and Charlotte Connelly; and one sister, Joan Tulich and her husband Eugene of Spring, Texas.

Visiting hours will be at the Douglass, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home, 25 Sanborn St., (cor. of Woburn St.) in Reading on Tuesday, June 25 from 4:00-8:00 pm. The funeral will be from the funeral home on Wednesday, June 26 at 9:30 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Agnes Church, 186 Woburn St., Reading at 10:30 am. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Arvid’s memory may be made to The Jimmy Fund, c/o Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O.
