1917 – 2023
Evelyn Austin Canty, 106, of Orlando, FL, passed away on November 28, 2023.
She was the daughter of the late Merton A. and Carrie M. Austin, with whom she moved to Orlando from Chicago in 1925. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Francis D. Canty, her sons, Daniel A. Canty and Brian D. Canty, and her brother, Merton J. Austin.
Survivors include her sons: Bill Canty (Marilynn) and Frank Canty; her daughter, Martha Young; and her daughters-in-law, Lynn Canty and Linda Canty. Also surviving are her eleven grandchildren, her nineteen great-grandchildren, and her one great-great-grandchild.
Evelyn was a 1935 graduate of Orlando High School, attended Orlando Business School, and was employed by O’Neill/Lee Insurance Company. In 1938, she married Francis D. Canty of Boston, MA. They lived in Wakefield and Reading, MA, until moving their family to Orlando in 1958.
Evelyn held a number of positions in local organizations, including St. John Vianney Catholic Church, the Pine Castle Garden Club, and the Central Florida Shell Club. She was also a member of the English Speaking Union, the Astronaut Trail Shell Club, and Conchologists of America. She particularly enjoyed gardening, shelling, ceramics, reading, traveling, and boating.
Services will be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Orlando. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM with Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at 1:00 PM at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Gotha, FL.
