Gordon E. Barnes Jr. of Reading, formerly of Lexington, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 30, 2023, with his family by his side.
Born on September 11, 1940, in Worcester, Gordon is the loving son of the late Gordon E. Barnes Sr. and Esther (Hurst) Barnes. Gordon is a warm, kind & gentle son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend who will be deeply missed.
Gordon was employed as a Division Engineer for the City Boston Public Works Department for 30 years. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and the occasional cigar with his sons-in-law. As an avid golfer, Gordon had 2 holes in one within a month of each other at Atlantic Country Club in Plymouth. He valued time spent at the ocean, and he proudly defended our freedom by serving in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1971.
Gordon is the beloved husband for 57 years of Patricia (Gavin) Barnes. He is the devoted father of Lisa McColgan and her husband Robert, Deanna Dodge and her husband Michael, and Gordon E. Barnes III and his wife Emily. The cherished grandfather “HaHa” of Ryan, Katie & Emily McColgan, Lily, Lola, Ada & Mickey Dodge, Gordon “Chip” Barnes IV & Hadley Barnes, Gordon is the dear brother of Betsy Kyle. He is also survived by his nephews, John & Chris Kyle, as well as many additional nieces and nephews.
Funeral from the Doherty – Barile Family Funeral Home, 11 Linden Street READING, Thursday, October 5th at 9:30 am, followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating Gordon’s Eternal Life in Saint Agnes Church, 186 Woburn Street Reading at 10:30 am. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories with Gordon’s Family on Wednesday, October 4, from 4-7 p.m. in the Funeral Home. Parking attendants and elevator are available.
