Obituary: Jean F. Thomson, 89

March 27, 1934 – July 6, 2023

Jean (Cassely) Thomson, 89, of Reading, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Thursday evening, July 6, 2023. She was the wife of the late William Thomson.

Born in Medford and raised in North Reading, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and Barbara Cassely, sister of Alice Ashdown and the late Barbara Powers.

Jean and her husband William came to Reading in 1960. Jean was an avid reader, bowler, and loved hosting the annual family Christmas party. Everyone will always remember the pictures of all the cousins on the stairs. She was a loving mother, CCD teacher, and Cub Scout den mother.

A curious person, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, friends, and sisters. Most of all, Jean was a devoted and loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Prior to her retirement, Jean worked for Addison-Wesley Publishing in Reading and served as a volunteer poll worker. She also volunteered her time helping with tax preparation with Senior Services.

Jean is survived by four sons and one daughter: Kenneth W. Thomson and his wife Melody of North Smithfield, RI; David A. Thomson and his wife Jesica of Issaquah, WA; William F. Thomson and his wife Lorrie of Milford, NH; Elaine J. Boyd and her husband Richard of Choctaw, OK; and Ronald S. Thomson and his partner Elaine Riordan of Reading. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Colin, Ben, Jess, Rebecca, Leah, Alex, Jennifer, and Nick; and her best friend since childhood, Mary Lou Furlong.

Visiting hours will be at the Douglass, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home, 25 Sanborn St. (cor. of Woburn St.) on Sunday evening, July 16 from 4:00-7:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, July 17 at 11:00 AM, followed by burial at the Laurel Hill Cemetery in Reading.
