Reverand Bob Sweet, Former Pastor of Old South Church, Dies at Age 85

Reading, MA — Reverand Dr. Robert K. Sweet, Jr., former Pastor of the Old South United Methodist Church, passed away at his home on Thursday, June 29, 2023, with his family surrounding him. A complete obituary can be read here.

Old South released the following statement on its website “Rev. Sweet served Old South from 1987-2001, and his impact on the congregation and community of Reading reverberates in the walls of Old South still. Rev. Sweet is remembered for his ‘fire and brimstone’ oration and for the personal connection he made with each and every member of the congregation.”

Reverand Sweet was active in the Reading Clergy Association and was a frequent host of the television program “Candlelights” on Channel 3. He was a long-serving chair of the Reading Housing Authority and a past president of the Reading Rotary Club.

On May 29, 1994, Reverand Sweet gave the invocation at Reading’s 350th Anniversary opening ceremonies.
