Gary was born in Reading, MA, to the late George & Ruth (St. Elmo) Smith. He grew up in East Boston and graduated from Lynn English High School, class of 1970. In 1971, he married Patricia Lucca, his high school sweetheart. They met on a blind date and were married for 51 years.
Gary enlisted in the Navy, serving four years. Following his discharge, he returned home and began working for the postal service. He entered law enforcement in 1989, ultimately retiring from the Lebanon Police Department as Police Chief, where he devoted 28 years to serving and protecting his community.
Gary loved spending time with his family, especially on his favorite boat in the early years or the many family vacations to Florida and VA Beach. Post-retirement he enjoyed spending extra time with his dogs, completing many home projects, helping family and friends with anything they needed, spending time with Hadley, and, of course, continued his passion for working on cars and motorcycles.
Gary is survived by his wife, Patricia “Trish” Smith; daughter, Heather Smith; son, Gary Smith, and his wife, Sara, and their daughter, Hadley; and brother, Tom Smith, and his wife, Deb.
A celebration of life will be announced in the spring of 2023.
