Obituary: George P. Coumounduros, 79

George Peter Coumounduros, 79, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. George had a wonderful sense of humor and was always ready with a new, and usually cringe-worthy, joke. Born and raised in Cambridge, George served his country during the Vietnam War, in the Army. It was while stationed in Los Angeles that he met the love of his life, Bernice. Together they shared 56 years of marriage. After being discharged from the Army, they moved back to Massachusetts and raised two sons in Stoneham. George founded and ran Cargo Transport, a regional trucking company, for over forty years. In his retirement, George spent many happy Saturdays serving as the world’s oldest altar boy for Vesper Services.

George is survived by his loving wife, Bernice (Negrete) Coumounduros of Stoneham, MA, his son Peter Coumounduros and his wife Amy of Reading, MA, and Mark Coumounduros of Cincinnati, OH. The true joy of his life were his beloved granddaughters, Caroline, Caitlin, and Zoe Coumounduros. He is also survived by his sister Betty Shushan and her husband, Don of Winchester, MA, and his dear Aunt Mary Vafiades and her husband, Jim, of Waltham. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was the son of the late Peter and Fanny (Georgekopoulos) Coumounduros and the brother of the late Constance Kasfikis.

Visiting hours will be held at the Douglass, Edgerley and Bessom Funeral Home, 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.) Reading on Wednesday, October 12, from 4:00-7:00pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church 5 Paleologos St. Peabody, on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
