Obituary: Wayne H. Habel, 91

August 6, 1931 – September 30, 2022

Wayne H. Habel, a resident of Reading for 64 years, passed away on September 30, 2022, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. He was 91 years of age. Wayne was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on August 6, 1931, the son of the late William and Sarah (Gordon) Habel. Wayne and his wife Margot met in the 9th grade, and both graduated from Classical High School in Springfield in 1950. Wayne first developed his lifelong passion for football, playing for Classical. Wayne went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and later a Master’s in business management from Northeastern University.

Wayne worked for many years for Market Forge Company in Everett and Wilmington, MA. Later in life, he also worked as an agent for Metropolitan Insurance in Danvers. Wayne was active in the Boy Scouts in Reading and was Scoutmaster for Troop 702 at the Methodist Church from 1969 to 1972. He was an avid cribbage master and fan of early aviation with a lifelong hobby of small-scale modeling of aircraft from the 1910s to 1940s.

Wayne was the loving husband of 68 years to Margot L. (Bushey) Habel. Devoted father of Mark L. Habel and his wife Beverley Erickson of Reading, Karen A. Brooks and her husband Richard of Alpharetta, GA, and Kurt W. Habel and his wife Lisa Beaulieu of Reading. Loving grandfather of Atticus H. Habel, Sarah E. Bunbury and her husband Tom, and Hannah A. Brooks. Loving great grandfather of Brooks and Blake Bunbury. He was the brother of the late William F. Habel and his late wife Margaret and uncle to four nieces Anne, Lynn, Patricia and Teresa and his nephew Michael.

A visitation will be held at the Douglass, Edgerley and Bessom Funeral Home 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.) Reading on Saturday, October 8 from 10am-12pm. A funeral service will be held for family and friends at 12pm following the visitation. Burial is private.
