Obituary: Frederick R. Madio, 81

December 19, 1940 – August 9, 2022

Frederick Richard Madio, age 81, of Marblehead, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Alice Madio, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage.

Born in Pittsfield, Mass., Fred was the son of the late Daniel and Florence (Woodin) Madio. He was the devoted father of Annie Madio (Nelson Pray) of Portland, Maine, and Glenn Madio (Tricia Finnerty) of Marblehead; the cherished grandfather of Finnegan Sutton, Sawyer Sutton, both of Portland, Maine, and Ayden Madio, Rowen Madio, and Willem Madio of Marblehead; and the dear brother of Bruce Madio, and Sandy Smith.

He grew up in Reading, Mass., where he graduated from Reading High School with the class of 1958. He graduated in 1963 from Northeastern University with a degree in Engineering and, at the age of 66, earned his Master’s in History from Harvard University. He raised his family in Winchester and Marblehead. Fred worked as an engineer at MITRE Corporation.

Sailing, photography, flying, archaeology, history, reading and researching were among his passions.

His family knew him as Mr. Fix-it, solving everyday problems like a broken window sash, a flat tire, and a grandchild in need of daycare. Yet despite years of research he was unable to locate Amelia Earhart. He volunteered for many years at the Marblehead Conservancy, engaging in a mighty battle against invasive species. His love of history inspired travels to Gettysburg, Jamestown, Normandy, and Oxford. Above all, his grandchildren brought him immense joy and love.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

His family suggests contributions be made in his memory to the organization that most reminds you of Fred.
