Sally Monroe Brown was born in Stoneham, MA, and grew up in Reading. She attended the Chestnut Hill School in grades 1-4 and sixth grade at the Joshua Eaton School the first year it opened. She was also in the first graduating class when Reading Memorial High School opened in 1956. Sally played violin and piano and was a Rainbow Girl in those years. She graduated from The University of Massachusetts in 1960 with a major in Psychology and earned a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from Columbia University.
Sally worked as an Occupational Therapist at the Liberty Mutual Insurance’s Rehabilitation Center in downtown Boston during the 1970’s, taking up residence in Boston’s Bay Village. She then went on to work as an Occupational Therapist for the Visiting Nurse Association- covering different parts of Boston including Dorchester and Roxbury until her retirement in 2012.
In the 1970’s she began playing the recorder with the Waterfield Consort, giving Renaissance Music Concerts in the suburban Boston area. She also joined Emmanuel Church in Boston where she attended services for many years. She enjoyed travelling and visited several spots around the U.S. with her friend, Deb Taylor.
She did volunteer work teaching English as a second language to Cambodian Refugees and earned a Master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from Boston University. .
In 1996 she moved back to Reading, MA, and in her spare time enjoyed her yard and feeding and watching the local birds. She was a lifelong animal lover and shared her home with one or two pet cats at a time.
She passed away on July 1, 2022 and leaves her sister, Marjorie Brown of Arlington; her friends, Stephen and Janice Babcock and Estelle Regolsky of Roslindale; Deb and Warren Taylor of York Maine; Viola Iungerich of CA; Don Gaudette of Tyngsboro; a niece and nephew, Katherine Woodbridge and Peter Grant; and several cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, Eleanor and Stanley Brown and her sister Susan Grant of Reading, MA, and her brother, Channing Brown of Santa Monica, CA.
Visiting hours at the Douglass, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home, 25 Sanborn St. (cor. of Woburn St.) Reading on Saturday, August 13 from 2:00-3:30 pm, followed by a memorial service at 3:30 pm. Burial will be private.
