Obituary: Robert F. Barrett, 98

March 28, 1924 – April 11, 2022

Robert F. Barrett, of Reading, passed away Monday, April 11, 2022. He was 98 years of age.

Born in Taunton, Robert was the son of the late Daniel J. and Helen (Weafer) Barrett. Robert was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Robert graduated from Reading High in 1941, then proudly served his country in the Army during World War II. He graduated from Boston College in 1951.

Robert met the love of his life, Lucretia, on a blind date set up by his brother and they shared 61 wonderful loving years together, raising their family in Reading. He was a Religious Education teacher at St. Agnes and St. Joseph for many years and spent his whole career, 36 years, as a teacher and principal in Wilmington Public Schools from 1951 to 1987. After retirement, Robert taught computers at St. Joseph School. He was proud to be a 4th Degree Knight in Reading K of C Council 1031.

Robert is the beloved husband of the late Lucretia (Murphy) Barrett. He is the devoted father of Mary (Beth) Gormley and her husband Terrence, Lucretia “Cre” Zerfas and her husband Tom, Jane McConnell and her husband David and Nancy Hinds and her husband Michael. The cherished grandfather of 11 and loving great grandfather of 14. Dear brother of the late Rev. Daniel J. Barrett, Sr. Mary Bernadette, SND and Anne Barrett. The brother-in-law of Benjamin Murphy and his wife Mary Ann, the late Edmond Murphy and his surviving wife Constance, the late John Murphy and his wife Agnes, the late Francis “Pete” Murphy and his wife Mary, the late Ann Murphy, and the late Walter Murphy and his wife Kathleen. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Doherty Barile Family Funeral Home 11 Linden St. READING on Friday, April 22, 2022 at 9 am followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating Robert’s Eternal Life in St. Joseph Church 173 Albion St. Wakefield at 10 am. Interment will follow in Woodend Cemetery, Reading.

Family and friends are kindly invited to gather and share memories with the family on Thursday, April 21, 2022, from 4 pm to 7 pm. Parking attendants and elevator available.
