Obituary: Grace (Fielding) Powell, 91

September 29, 1929 – August 26, 2021

On Thursday, August 26, 2021, Grace E. (Fielding) Powell, loving wife to John and loving mother to five children passed away at age 91.

Grace was born on 9/20/1929 in South Boston, MA. to Henry and Edith (Pothoff) Fielding.  She attended Girls Latin School in South Boston and went on to graduate from Boston University. Grace was a teacher and she taught at Brewster Academy, Wolfeboro, NH. She left teaching to work at Ionics, Inc. in Watertown MA, where she met and later married John H Powell, Jr.. Through the years Grace continued to work as an administrative secretary with Ginsberg Brothers, Sugarman Brothers, Lipton Pet Food, and finally retired in 2011, at the age of 81, from American International Health Services in Peabody MA.  

Grace was a resident of Reading, MA for 47 years before moving to live with her son, Bernard, in Londonderry, NH in 2012 and then in 2015, she moved to her current residence at Mt. Carmel nursing facility in Manchester.

She was a 60-year member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the St. Clementine chapter, Somerville, MA.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Edith Fielding, her husband John H. Powell Jr., her daughter Anne B. Powell, sisters Mary D’Agostino and Edith O’Sullivan, and her brother Henry Fielding.

She is survived by her sister Ellen Palmer of Tempe, AZ; her sons Matthew J. Powell of Richmond VA, John M. Powell of San Diego, CA, Bernard M. Powell and his wife Carol of Londonderry, NH, Daniel A. Powell and his wife Karen of Farmington, CT; her grandchildren Meaghan Oliverio and her husband Joshua of Allenstown, NH, Shaun Powell of Londonderry, NH, Rachel Powell of Farmington, CT, Katie Powell of Farmington, CT, and Samuel Powell of Farmington, CT.

Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at the Douglass, Edgerley & Bessom Funeral Home 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.), Reading, MA from 4-8 PM. Her Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at 10:30 AM at Saint Agnes Church, 186 Woburn Street, Reading, MA. with burial to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Arlington, MA.
