Obituary: Susan C. Cavicchi, 78, Former School Committee Member

1943 – 2021

Susan C. Cavicchi, age 78, of Walpole formerly of Reading, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2021, after a period of declining health. She was a 1960 graduate of Winthrop High School and received her bachelor’s degree in Education from Boston University in 1964. After graduating from college, she married the love of her life, Robert J. “Bob” Cavicchi, to whom she was wed 54 years.

Bob and Sue began their life together in Alexandria, VA, where Sue taught first grade. After moving back to Massachusetts, where they raised their three sons, Sue worked for many years as the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Security Contractors Association, later the Massachusetts Burglar and Fire Alarm Association.

An avid gardener, she also enjoyed reading, sewing, decorating, going to the movies, and doing crossword puzzles — never a Sunday would pass without the Boston Globe Magazine crossword puzzle being completed with a ballpoint pen.

Sue was very passionate about politics both locally and nationally, serving on the Town of Reading, MA Recreation Committee, as a Town Meeting representative, and as a member of the Reading School Committee. While she was equally dispassionate about cooking and grocery shopping, Sue was nevertheless an enthusiastic host for progressive dinners and could always be relied on for favorite holiday desserts of chocolate mint and butterscotch brownies.

Above all, Sue was immensely proud of and dedicated to her family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bob, and is survived by her children: Dan Cavicchi and his wife Lynn of Mansfield, Tim Cavicchi and his wife Robin of Mansfield and Kevin Cavicchi and his wife Kristin of Wadsworth, OH. She was “Nana Sue” to seven of the greatest joys in her life, her grandchildren: Noah, Jake, Bella, Sam, Lulu, Kyra, and Owen. She was a devoted sister to Jane Briggs, Winifred Adamson, and Jill Fitzgerald, and to Jon Fitzgerald and David Fitzgerald, both of whom predeceased her, and loving aunt to a number of nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, August 16th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.

Funeral services, along with burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne will be private.

Memorial donations in Susan’s memory may be made to the Friends of the Walpole Public Library c/o Walpole Public Library, 143 School Street, Walpole, MA 02081.
