At the end of Thursday’s School Committee meeting, Superintendent of Schools John Doherty read a statement announcing that he would be taking a leave of absence. In an email on Friday, June 28 Doherty informed Reading Public Schools Staff about the leave of absence, and that it would be effective at the end of the day. Doherty offered no explanation for the leave of absence, only citing “family and personal responsibilities.”
During Doherty’s leave, Chief Financial Officer Gail Dowd will be responsible for the day to day operations of the school district. Doherty expressed confidence in Dowd and in the rest of the central office staff to “continue to move the district forward.”
Doherty mentioned no timetable for his return.
