SUMMARY:Democratic and Republican Town Committees Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:Reading\, MA — The Reading Democratic (RDTC) and Republican Town (RRTC) Committees are proud to announce they are partnering to co-host the official Reading Candidate Forum! Previously organized by RCTV\, the move to a smaller office has made hosting this year’s forum challenging. However\, the two political town committees have come together to fill the gap. \nRRTC Chair Eric Bergstrom said\, “We are excited to share this with the community. It’s a great opportunity for our committees to come together and preserve this important event.” RDTC Chair Vanessa Alvarado added\, “RCTV has done an exceptional job hosting this event. The forum allows residents to meet candidates and learn where they stand on important issues. I’m so glad all the candidates agreed to participate in this non-partisan event.” \nThe forum will be next Wednesday\, March 26\, with the Select Board forum at 6pm and the School Committee at 7:30pm. It will be held at the Reading Public Library and will be recorded and aired by RCTV (Comcast Ch. 9\, Verizon Ch. 31\, and YouTube). Be sure to tune in!

SUMMARY:Retracing History: WWII Stories with Vernon Chandler
DESCRIPTION:Join the Reading Historical Commission for a compelling talk\, A WWII European Tour\, with former resident Vernon Chandler. Mr. Chandler will discuss the multi-country journey through Europe he took to trace the footsteps of his first cousin\, Pvt. Kenneth Miller\, who was killed in Germany in 1944. \nKenneth was only 19 years old when he died. Despite the best efforts of his mother\, Annie\, his remains were never recovered. \nMr. Chandler was so deeply moved by Kenneth and Annie’s story that he took a two-week World War II\, 1800-mile driving tour of Europe in September 2022. This tour included visits to 6 American Battle Monuments Commission cemeteries and many historic WWII sites in Paris\, Normandy\, Belgium\, the Netherlands\, Luxembourg\, Germany\, and Austria. \nOn his trip\, Mr. Chandler uncovered information about Kenneth and his unit\, the 743rd Tank Battalion. He was also able to locate the place where the tank-on-tank battle occurred\, which took Kenneth’s life on October 18\, 1944. \nMr. Chandler will also share the stories of his visits to the WWII graves and memorials of other Massachusetts soldiers\, including some from Reading. \nMr. Chandler has prepared a multimedia historical presentation\, which he will give on Saturday\, January 11\, 2025\, at 1 PM in the Community Room at the Reading Public Library (64 Middlesex Avenue). \nMr. Chandler believes his once-in-a-lifetime experience is only meaningful if he shares it with others.

SUMMARY:Antiquarian Society Hosts Biennial Meeting – A Look Back at Feast Prep\, Circa 1750
DESCRIPTION:As you ponder hosting family and friends for Thanksgiving this year\, do you ever wonder how a harvest celebration dinner (before Thanksgiving was an official holiday) was prepared over 250 years ago? \nWonder no more! \nOn Monday\, November 18\, at 7:00 p.m. at the Reading Public Library\, the Reading Antiquarian Society\, the caretaker organization of the Parker Tavern\, will hold its biennial meeting. Following a very brief business meeting\, a program will be presented\, giving a little insight into what it took to create a harvest feast before 1775. Learn a bit about what our ancestors ate\, what it took to put it all together\, and how various foods were cooked. While some traditional dishes remain today\, others\, like turtle\, may have fallen out of favor. Attendees will receive a copy of a few authentic period recipes to try out — or not! \nSome of the Tavern’s cooking items and utensils will be used and explained during the presentation. You’ll recognize some things\, but a few may surprise you! \nWe hope you’ll attend this retro look at how our ancestors handled a celebratory meal in their rustic kitchens. This little history lesson will likely turn into one that will give you something unexpected to be very thankful for this Thanksgiving — your kitchen! \nLight refreshments will be served — but not a holiday feast sampler!
