SUMMARY:Reading Celebrates 40 Years as Tree City USA with Planting for the Future
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US TO PLANT 500 TREES ON SATURDAY\, APRIL 26!\nReading\, MA- Reading proudly celebrates its 40th year as a Tree City USA with a special community planting event. This milestone celebration also honors the legacy of the Reading Town Forest\, which is celebrating its 95th year in 2025. \nOrganized by the Reading Public Library\, Town Forest Committee\, Department of Public Works\, and Scout Troop 702\, this event pays tribute to Reading’s rich forestry tradition. \nOn April 26\, 1930\, Reading held its first Community Planting Day when scouts\, town officials\, and citizens planted 15\,000 trees in just one day\, creating a special “Council Ring” at the forest’s center that still exists today as a symbol of unity. \nA Legacy of Urban Forestry: 40 Years as a Tree City USA \nIn 1985\, under the leadership of Tree Warden Irving “Bud” Dickey\, Reading became a Tree City USA-a national designation recognizing communities committed to sound urban forestry practices. Now celebrating 40 consecutive years with this distinction\, Reading stands as the second oldest Tree City community in Massachusetts. \nThis achievement reflects four decades of meeting the program’s core standards: maintaining a forestry department\, enacting a public tree ordinance\, dedicating a minimum of $2 per capita to forestry efforts\, and observing Arbor Day with meaningful community engagement. \nCurrent Tree Warden Michael Hannaford and his talented Forestry Division continue this tradition through initiatives such as planting new trees throughout Reading’s streets\, parks\, cemeteries\, and public buildings\, reinforcing the town’s commitment to sustainable urban forestry. \nHow to Participate in “Planting for the Future” \nSign up is requested to help manage limited parking. For details and to sign up\, visit the Reading Public Library event calendar. \nAs we celebrate this 40-year milestone as a Tree City USA and approach the 95th anniversary of our Town Forest\, this event demonstrates what our community can accomplish when we work together. \nThank you to the Tree Warden Mike Hannaford and the Reading Department Public Works for the content of this article. \nRooted in Reading is made possible by grant funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services as administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. Additional support is provided by the Friends of the Reading Public Library and the Reading Public Library Foundation.

SUMMARY:Colonial Chorus Players - First Date
DESCRIPTION:This pop-rock musical comedy follows a mismatched couple’s hilariously awkward blind date—on stage in Reading May 2–11\nKimberly Merck and Richie DeJesus star as a mismatched couple on a blind date in the musical comedy First Date at Colonial Chorus Players May 2–11. Photo courtesy of Colonial Chorus Players.\n  \nReading\, MA — At first glance\, Aaron and Casey have absolutely nothing in common: He’s into mergers and acquisitions and looking for a meaningful relationship\, while she’s a free-spirited artist who has always had a thing for bad boys in the past. \nWhen Aaron and Casey are set up on a blind date\, their first impressions set the tone for the rest of the evening\, as when he sings\, “She’s a little artsy. She’s hip and cool. She’s just like all those girls that ignored me all through school” and she counters with\, “He’s a bit annoying\, and overdressed. He’s got the kind of vibe that says\, ‘Look at me—I’m stressed.’” \nThat’s the setup of the pop-rock musical comedy First Date\, coming to Colonial Chorus Players of Reading May 2–11. \nFirst performed on Broadway in 2013\, First Date has music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner and a book by Austin Winsberg\, largely inspired by personal experience. Allison Holloway directs\, with musical direction by Andrew Wray. \nThe cast features Richie DeJesus and Kimberly Merck as Aaron and Casey. Katie Iafolla\, Robb Laureles\, Kristen Sehn\, Michael Silvia\, and Reading’s own Stephen Russo play a chorus of besties\, parents\, older siblings\, and exes that live in the main characters’ inner thoughts and comment on the date as the evening progresses. \nFirst Date has performances May 2\, 3\, 9\, and 10 at 7:30 PM and May 4 and 11 at 2 PM at the Old Hose House Theater\, 1249 Main Street\, Reading. Please note: This show contains mature language and is recommended for audiences 16+. For tickets and information\, go to ccp1961.org.

SUMMARY:Opening Day at Parker Tavern
DESCRIPTION:Explore historic exhibits\, gardens\, and local lore every Sunday through October\n\nReading\, MA — Beginning on Sunday\, May 4\, Parker Tavern will open for the season. Every Sunday from May to October\, from 2:00 to 5:00 pm\, the Tavern will welcome you. Come for a tour\, explore the gardens and grounds\, or visit the current exhibit. \nOn May 4\, we will unveil a special exhibit featuring Reading farm-related items\, including early advertisements\, Reading-specific glass milk bottles\, and farm equipment. \n\nAlthough it is hard to imagine today’s suburban Reading as a farming and agricultural community\, like most towns before 1900\, it was. What did our farmers raise? It could have been dairy cows\, poultry\, vegetables\, or landscaping plants in nurseries. Back in the 1950s\, you could purchase Reading-grown vegetables at the Hopkins Farm stand (also known as Hoppy’s) at the corner of Main and Hopkins Street (now a gas station); the only produce they sold but didn’t raise was apples. The entire staff was comprised of local lads — high school and college boys who planted\, weeded\, harvested\, and tended the vegetable stand. Additionally\, many people still had milk delivered to their homes in glass bottles (recycling was done way ahead of its time!). In addition\, a few still owned horses\, including two families on Forest Street near Grove. \nCurious if your house stands on former farmland? Come look at some old maps of Reading and compare it to a list of farms. Or tell us your memories of farms here in Reading. Have you been told stories of what was on your property before your house was built? \nAs you enjoy the exhibit\, be sure to also notice the Tavern’s gardens; many of its flowers and herbs were planted explicitly for cooking or medicinal purposes. And\, as we learned at last November’s members’ meeting\, the vegetable garden was vital to the family’s wellbeing. While some of this year’s crops were recently planted (beets\, carrots\, potatoes\, peas)\, you can hear about some favored crops\, like corn\, squash\, and beans\, that will be planted soon. \nIf you haven’t read the series of articles on the Reading Post written by the RAS about Reading’s involvement in the events of the Revolutionary War\, check them out. Be sure to keep your eyes and ears open over the next few years for the 250th celebrations in Massachusetts and elsewhere. \nIn addition to the Tavern’s Sunday season start\, why not take in the following events that the Reading Antiquarian Society will be part of: \n\nMay 4 Parker Tavern reopens from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.\nMay 17 Reading Garden Club Plant Sale on the Common\nJune 14 Friends and Family Day at Birch Meadow\nJune 21 The Marquis de Lafayette returns to Reading!\nJune 28 PorchFest at the Tavern and several other locations; bring folding chairs or blankets to enjoy the tunes in comfort\n\nWe hope to see you at the Tavern.

The photographs in At Work capture genuine moments that emerge through conversation\, not necessarily direction. \nFrom ranchers in Texas to a chemist in Boston\, a sumo wrestler in Japan to street performers in Cuba\, At Work is a collection of photographs of people from around the world “just doing their jobs.” It is a study of our world and how the people in it follow their unique callings. In At Work\, Brian turns that lens on people from around the world doing what they love\, capturing the dignity\, passion\, and humanity in over 500 individuals across a wide range of professions.
