SUMMARY:Whitelam Books to Host Book Launch with Author Michael McLaughlin
DESCRIPTION:Whitelam Books is pleased to welcome Reading-based author and educator Michael McLaughlin to share his new book\, Plymouth Blitz: The Bombing of Portland Square and the Devastation of a City\, on Sunday\, September 20 at 3:00PM. Whitelam Books is located in downtown Reading at 610 Mai3:00 PMet\, near the intersection of Haven Street and Main Street. \nThis event is free and open to the public – all are welcome! \nAbout the Event: \nPlymouth Blitz recounts the deadliest civilian incident in Plymouth during the Second World War\, when a German bomb struck the Portland Square Air Raid Shelter. Through eyewitness accounts and archival research\, this book captures the courage\, fear\, and resilience of ordinary people living under the threat of aerial attack. \nOn the night of April 22-23\, 1941\, as the German Luftwaffe descended on Plymouth\, families from Portland Square and Victoria Street sought refuge in the communal air-raid shelter beneath the park at the centre of the square. Just after midnight\, a bomb tore through one wing of the shelter\, killing at least 71 people in the city’s most devastating incident of the war. Despite its scale and human cost\, the Portland Square tragedy has never before been explored as a full\, integrated account. \nA richly researched and deeply human account\, Plymouth Blitz is essential reading for history enthusiasts\, students\, educators\, and anyone seeking to explore the Blitz beyond the headlines.

SUMMARY:Colonial Chorus Players Presents Dark Satire The Pillowman
DESCRIPTION:Martin McDonagh’s play exploring the line between art and reality runs October 2–11 at Reading’s Old Hose House Theater\nReading\, MA — Does art imitate life\, or does life imitate art? That’s the question at the heart of Martin McDonagh’s dark\, twisty satire The Pillowman\, presented by Colonial Chorus Players October 2–11 at the Old Hose House Theater\, 1249 Main Street\, Reading. \nThe Pillowman is set in a police interrogation room in an unnamed totalitarian state where a young writer\, Katurian\, is under suspicion for inciting horrific violent acts through his short stories. The Pillowman is recommended for mature audiences only and contains adult language\, child abuse\, suicide\, physical violence\, ableist slurs\, and other mature content. \nThe cast features AJ Lyman\, Casey Preston\, Mark Damon\, Ryan March\, Nick Bennett-Zendzian\, Addie Pates\, and Mia Imparato under the direction of Corey Cadigan. \nAdvance tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for seniors/students. In honor of CCP’s 65th anniversary this year\, a special $65 ticket is available for “sapphire supporters.” Tickets at the door are $33 for adults and $25 for seniors/students\, available 30 minutes before showtime\, payable in cash or via Venmo.
As Katurian attempts to defend his artistic freedom\, his stories come to life on the stage through creative staging\, and the audience is left to decipher their true meaning and impact. \nMartin McDonagh is an award-winning Irish playwright and filmmaker known for provocative works such as The Banshees of Inisherin and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing\, Missouri. SUMMARY:Being Jonas Wilder — A Solo Music-Theater Evening
DESCRIPTION:At Unitarian Universalist Church of Reading on October 10th\nReading\, MA — On Saturday\, October 10th at 3:30 PM\, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Reading and the Creative Humanity Alliance are co-presenting “Being Jonas Wilder” — a solo music-theater experience performed by singer-songwriter and author Mark Firehammer. \nAbout the Show: It is a 70-minute event that is genuinely hard to categorize: part concert\, part memoir\, part something else entirely. Drawing on Firehammer’s novel The Echo and the Voice and album Songs in the Key of Return\, the performance weaves together five original songs with the stories of what those songs were actually carrying in real time. Audiences come curious and tend to leave quiet — in a good way. \nEvent Details: \nRSVP / Info: https://creativehumanityalliance.org/being-jonas-wilder/ \nWhen: Saturday\, October 10\, 2026 · 3:30 PM (Doors open at 3:00 PM) \nWhere: Unitarian Universalist Church of Reading (239 Woburn Street\, Reading\, MA) \nAdmission: Free to attend. Tax-deductible donations are welcome and will benefit both co-presenting non-profits.

SUMMARY:Reading Cultural Council Opens FY27 Arts Grant Applications
DESCRIPTION:Local artists and organizations can apply for funding to support cultural programs serving the Reading community through October 15\nReading\, MA — The Reading Cultural Council recently announced the opening of this year’s grant cycle.  Do you have a creative project that could benefit our town? \nIn FY27 Mass Cultural Council will invest $5.850\,000 into the Local Cultural Council (LCC) Program\, in which Reading is included.  This is our nation’s largest grassroots cultural funding network. \nAs an LCC\, the Reading Cultural Council (RCC) awards grants to individuals and organizations offering cultural programs that serve the Reading community. These include school field trips\, after-school programs\, concerts\, festivals\, lectures\, theater\, dance\, music\, and film. The projects take place in schools\, community centers\, libraries\, elder care facilities\, town halls\, parks\, and wherever our community comes together. \nThe grant cycle runs now through October 15th.  Funds are granted on a reimbursement basis.  Eligibility rules and the official application form are available at https://massculturalcouncil.org/local-council/reading.  Read through the local requirements and then click the Apply Now button. \nWe are fortunate to have such a robust volunteer-based arts and culture community in our town\, and RCC encourages applications each year. \nIn addition to the LCC program\, the Massachusetts Cultural Council manages and funds other grants available for specific types of arts and cultural events.  While you are on the website\, we urge you to explore the myriad of other potential sources of financial support.  While there\, you can sign up for an information session on 9/102026.
