William F. Hayes of Reading passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, at Bear Hill Nursing Center. He was 85 years of age.
Born on December 9, 1934, in Everett, William is the loving son of the late Arthur S. Hayes and Maude (Silver) Hayes. William is a warm and caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Known as Bill to family and friends, Bill was a devoted family man who grew up in Somerville, MA and attended Matignon High School in Cambridge, and attended college at Holy Cross where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Bill then moved to Reading, MA after marrying his lovely wife, Joan Cormier-Hayes, where they have lived for the past 60 years. Bill always dreamed of having a large family and was granted that wish. He spent the last years of his career working in Boston as an Assessor for the Commonwealth of Mass and was able to retire at the age of 55. Bill enjoyed an active retirement enjoying family dinners and outings including camping, hiking, canoeing, and sporting events. He also loved square dancing, playing golf, playing ping pong, and traveling. He was an avid Boston sports fan and was able to attend Boston Red Sox Spring Training games in Florida every March for the last 30 years of his retirement. Bill was known for his great sense of humor and motto of “Don’t work too hard. Make sure you make time for fun”.
William is the beloved husband of Joan (Cormier) Hayes. He is the devoted father of Mark Patrick Hayes and his wife Judy, Michele Ann Herman and her partner Greg, Susan Hayes – Lopez and her late husband Hector, Anne Hayes and her late wife Linda, John Patrick Hayes, Kevin Patrick Hayes and his wife Christine and the late Patricia Hayes. The cherished grandfather of Jenelle, Christian, Patrice, Sam, Daniel, and Juan Mateo, William is the dear brother of Arthur E. Hayes and his wife Peggy.
Funeral from the Doherty – Barile Family Funeral Home, 11 Linden St. READING Saturday, Dec. 12th at 9:30 am followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating William’s Eternal Life in St. Agnes Church, 186 Woburn St. Reading at 10:30 am. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories with William’s Family on Friday, Dec. 11th from 4-7 pm in the Funeral Home. Parking attendants and elevators are available. Per MA regulations, face coverings must be worn while at the Funeral Home and not more than 40% capacity will be allowed in the Funeral Home at one time. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
