1935 – 2026
Nancy Hanley Guay, 90, of Reading, MA, passed away peacefully at her home on July 20th. She will be dearly missed by her children and their partners, her grandchildren and their partners, and her great-grandchildren, along with many extended family members and friends.
Nancy was born in Columbia County, NY in September 1935 to Harold and Loretta (Carney) Hanley. She was raised in Detroit, MI, and Manchester, CT. It was there that she attended high school and met her future husband, Albert Guay. They married after college and lived in Boston, Vicenza, Italy, and Rochester, NY. By the time they settled in Wakefield, MA, they were a family of seven.
Nancy was a devoted mother, making sure to attend every event her children participated in and making sure they knew their ambitions should have no limits. She was well-known to the players and spectators at her grandchildren’s sporting events around Reading and in New Hampshire.
Summers at Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire were very special to Nancy. When her children were young, there was a constant flow of visitors, family and friends alike. Later, weekends were full of her children and their families. Some of her happiest times were spent on the porch watching her grandchildren play in and around the water, much like she had watched her children do the same.
Her pride in her family was endless. She made it a point to be involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives and to let them know how important they were to her.
Nancy was predeceased by her parents and her sisters Barbara Hanley and Virginia Ubertalli. She is survived by her children Jeffrey Guay, Laura Guay (Mike), Cynthia Nelson (Mark), Lisa Blais (Will), and Pamela Terhune (Jon), her grandchildren Matthew, Jessica, Ryan (Brya), Austin (Hannah), Nicole (Ben), Conor, Stephanie, Adam, Michael, Aidan, and Sean, and her great-grandchildren Teegan, Cole, Tess and Theo.
A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation or the Lake Sunapee Protective Association.
