Obituary: Michael William Carvalho, 64

January 21, 1962 – July 12, 2026

Michael William Carvalho, 64, of North Reading (formerly of Wakefield and Reading) was called home to Heaven in the early morning of Sunday, July 12, 2026, after suddenly being stricken ill. He was a beloved son, brother, and friend, though “Uncle Mike” might have been how he loved being referred to the most.

Born on January 21, 1962, in Fall River, he was the first child of five of the late William J. Carvalho and Claire I. (Harrison) Carvalho.

As a graduate of Reading High School in 1980, Michael picked up a lifelong love and appreciation for American History and often would be found buried in a book, learning all he could about our country’s roots and the American Presidents, sharing little-known facts with anyone who would show an interest. He was very intelligent in a quiet, unassuming way, though he admittedly couldn’t spell.

Michael was an avid sports fan who rarely missed a Celtics, Patriots or Red Sox game on TV or the radio. He often talked about attending Red Sox games as a child with his father. Perhaps due to his formative years, growing up in New Jersey, his favorite hockey team was the New York Rangers. Like his father, he was most animated when talking sports with family and friends and held strong, usually accurate opinions and assessments.

Music played an important soothing role in Michael’s life as he would listen for hours. He had an impressive album (later a CD) collection which was envied and often “borrowed” by his younger siblings. He enjoyed attending live concerts, especially following the local band “Private Lightening”. Steely Dan was his all-time favorite group in addition to the Beatles, Eagles and Devo among many others.

Above all, Michael loved and lived the values of his Christian faith and read his Bible often. His spirituality would shine through in his many beautiful poems he authored and in his contentment in life, and in his faith that he would be united with God in eternal heavenly peace after a life well-lived by making the most out of what life has dealt him hand in hand with Jesus.

Michael cherished the times gathering with his family celebrating holidays and birthdays where his nieces and nephews always looked forward to his unique, often homemade little gifts. Sharing stories, eating good meals, playing games were memories with Michael that will always be treasured. He will be remembered for for his inner strength during his many medical trials, his loving kindness, his keen sense of humor, his generous and grateful heart and his unwavering devotion to those he loved.

Though our hearts are filled with sadness, we find comfort in the many memories he leaves behind and the love he shared so freely. He will be forever loved, forever missed, and forever remembered.

Michael is survived by his beloved mother, Claire (Harrison) Carvalho of Wilmington; his devoted sisters, Lori & Kevin Fortin, Lynn & Robert Westcott and Christina & Raymond Garrett; his cherished nieces and nephews Lawrence Meuse, Amanda Meuse, William Fortin, Michelle Fortin, David Fortin, Jessica Carvalho and Rachel Garrett; his endeared great nieces and nephews Aubrey, Amiyah, Alexander, Charlotte, Adeline and Noah along with many loved aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.

Michael was predeceased by his admired father, William Carvalho in 2010, his dearest brother, Steven Carvalho in 2019 and his precious nephew, Randy Carvalho in 2019 along with his loving grandparents, Irene & Louis Harrison and Anna & Manuel Carvalho all of which he is sure to have a joyous reunion with in Heaven.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who provided care, kindness, and friendship to Michael throughout his life. We especially appreciate Royal Meadow View in North Reading for helping Michael be comfortable these past couple of years and providing him the opportunity to meet new friends and participate in activities like bingo and working out that he took much pleasure in.

There will be no calling hours. A celebration of Michael’s life will be held in September, where you can share your sweet memories of him.

In lieu of flowers or donations, just appreciate your life as Michael did, say a prayer, or do something nice for someone unexpectedly.

Douglass, Edgerley, & Bessom Funeral Home in Reading, MA, is assisting the family.
