Obituary: George E. Chabot Jr., 85

February 28, 1940 ~ December 21, 2025

Chabot, George E. Jr. -Of North Reading, Dec.21st. Beloved husband of 63 years to Elaine (Briscoe). Father of Mark Chabot and his wife Kim of Andover, Michelle Mehr and her husband Seth of OR, Brian Chabot and his wife Ruth of Lynn, and Kara DeGiovanni and her partner Luke Moore of OR. Grandfather of Nicolas, Mae, Amanda, and Mazli. Brother of Ronald Chabot and his wife Helen of FL, Carol Bond of FL, and the late Elaine Watters. George is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and extended family.

George was born and raised in Winchester, MA, and graduated from Winchester High School in 1958. He got his BA from Harvard in 1961, his Master’s in Radiological Health from Harvard in 1968, and his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Lowell in 1986. George served in the U.S. Public Health Service from 1963-1969 and worked for 30+ years at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) as a professor, teaching and carrying out research in the Physics and Radiological Sciences programs. Referred to as a “Quiet Giant” in the field, he was a 55-year member of the Health Physics Society (HPS) and was recipient of the Founders Award in 2017. George said his work never felt like work, and he continued to be active in the field until his passing. 

One of George’s most beloved pastimes was playing the trumpet in the Reading and North Reading civic bands for over 50 years. He was a tinkerer at heart, and in his later years, enjoyed fixing and reselling vintage trumpets. At home, George was well known in the family for preparing a myriad of tasty dishes. George’s parents were devout Catholics, and his mother instilled in him an unwavering faith in Christ that guided him throughout his life. He led a weekly bible study online and served as an usher at St. Theresa’s Church, where he worshipped for 58 years. 

George was known as a brilliant, humble, patient, and kind person. He leaves a legacy of love, one that will live on through all the lives he touched.

Visiting hours will be Saturday Dec 27th from 9-11am at Cota Funeral Home, 335 Park St. (Rte. 28) NORTH READING, at Reading line. Funeral procession departs from the funeral home Saturday, Dec. 27th at 11:00am. Funeral Mass in St. Theresas Church, 63 Winter St. (Rte. 62), North Reading at 11:30am. Interment at Riverside Cemetery, North Reading.
