Andover, MA — Operation ELF (Everybody Loves Families), a volunteer-run charity that facilitates holiday gifts for at-risk children across Massachusetts, is marking its 25th year and kicking off its giving season. They’ve delivered nearly 25,000 gifts over the course of 25 years to families across New England, including many in the Wakefield and Reading area. They anticipate that 2025 will be their biggest gift year yet.

Founded in 2000, the nonprofit connects donors with the holiday wishes of children living in shelters and transitional housing. In 2024, Operation ELF fulfilled wish lists for nearly 2,000 children. This year the need is greater than ever. ELF is seeking more people in Wakefield to shop and fulfill a child’s wish. They will have a booth at the Wakefield Thanksgiving Market on November 22nd and have gift drop off locations right in Wakefield and Reading, making it easy for local donors to help.
“Our mission has always been simple — to keep the magic of the holidays alive for every child, no matter their circumstances,” said Tim Spellman, event manager for Operation ELF. “Reaching 25 years is not just an anniversary, it’s a celebration of community generosity. For over 25 years, we built our network of agencies and community volunteers to turn wishes and needs into joy for our local children.”
Operation ELF partners with over 20 local social service agencies and shelters. The agencies collect wish lists from children most in need and Operation ELF pairs volunteer shoppers with each child’s wish. Each shopper purchases gifts, typically spending $50 to $65 per child. Operation ELF volunteers then collect, package, and deliver the gifts to ensure they reach families in time for the holidays.
Lino Covarrubias, a representative of ELF partner agency Jewish Family Services of Metrowest (JFSMW) said “For many years, Jewish Family Service of Metrowest (JFSMW) has witnessed the extraordinary kindness of Operation ELF. Their volunteers bring joy and dignity to children from immigrant families who might otherwise face a difficult winter. Operation ELF is a trusted partner–organized, dependable, and filled with heart. Their commitment to ensuring that every child feels seen and valued during the holidays reflects the very best of our community spirit.”
Sponsors, donors, and volunteers can sign up or contribute at operationelf.org. Businesses, schools, houses of worship, and community groups looking for meaningful holiday service projects are also encouraged to participate. Sponsors will be matched starting mid-November and gifts will be collected until December 4th.
