Obituary: Joan E. (Barker) Forget, 96

April 19, 1928 ~ November 2, 2024

Joan Forget passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 2, 2024, with family by her side. She was 96 years old.

Joan was born and raised in Somerville, MA, the sixth of seven children born to parents David and Ethel (Lynch) Barker.

She met Robert C. Forget on a blind date arranged by dear friends and married soon thereafter.

Joan and Bob settled in Reading, MA, and raised four children, the eldest being Nancy, followed in order by Robert, Jeffrey, and Peter. Joan was primarily a homemaker during her children’s early years. She cherished being near the ocean’s edge with her family. Indeed, until soon before her death, when told by a family member that they were at the beach, she would eagerly and longingly ask, “Did you have a swim?”

When her children were older, Joan proudly worked as an administrative secretary at Phillips Andover Academy for many years. Later in their time together, Joan and Bob were able to travel, enjoying time in England, Italy, and France.

For many of their later years, Joan and Bob resided with their daughter Nancy and her husband Richard Kinch in Dorchester, MA. Following Bob’s death and that of her daughter Nancy, Joan moved to Brewster, MA, to be closer to her son Peter and his wife Ann, and their daughter Denney. She then moved to Berkshire County to be close to her son Jeffrey and daughter-in-law Nancy, and their daughters Avery and Emma.

Joan was predeceased by her parents David and Ethel, her siblings Robert, Ethel, Helen, Arthur, David and Paul, her husband Robert, and her two beloved children Robert and Nancy.

She is survived by her son Jeffrey and his wife Nancy (Noonan) Forget of Lee, MA, her son Peter of Brewster, MA, and her daughter-in-law Ann of Harwich, MA. She will be lovingly remembered and cherished by her granddaughters Avery and her husband Robert Reed of Medford, MA, Emma and her partner Harry Esterio of Stoneham, MA, and Denney of Harwich, MA.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at The Landing at Laurel Lake assisted living facility for their tender and compassionate care during Joan’s final days, especially Rachel, Mary, Ama, Jess, Jordan, Mackenzie, and Maddie, as well as the special care and support of Hospice of the Berkshires. True angels, each and every one.

Joan will be interred at Bourne National Cemetery in Bourne, MA, alongside her husband, Robert, and her daughter, Nancy. Donations can be made in Joan Forget’s name to the Special Olympics or the ASPCA through the Kelly Funeral Home in Lee, MA.
