Martin Joseph “Joe” McDermott, born October 30, 1939, in Malden, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at his home in Reading, Massachusetts, on September 1, 2024, with his loving daughter by his side. Joe was the cherished son of Patrick and Agnes McDermott of Malden, Massachusetts, and a proud graduate of Malden Catholic High School and Boston College.
Joe is survived by his devoted daughter, Kate McDermott of Reading, Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Anne (Lane) McDermott, with whom he shared over 40 years of marriage; his father, Patrick McDermott; his mother, Agnes McDermott; and his sister, Sr. Shawn Marie McDermott, with whom he shared a special bond. Joe leaves behind his extended family, many friends, his work family, and his neighborhood family that he cared about deeply.
Known for his kind, gentle demeanor and unwavering values, Joe faced many challenges in his life with grace and resilience, never allowing adversity to dampen his spirit. His greatest joy was his family, and he took immense pride in his daughter, Kate. Joe had a profound love for sports, nature, food, and travel with his family. He cherished his annual trips to national parks with Kate.
In his professional life, Joe served as the Director of Human Resources at Fishery Products, where he built numerous lifelong friendships and took great pleasure in helping others succeed. He was a remarkable listener and an engaging conversationalist who relished giving advice and supporting those around him.
Joe’s warmth and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone he met. If you knew Joe, you loved Joe.
Funeral from the Doherty – Barile Family Funeral Home, 11 Linden Street READING on Friday, September 6th at 9:30am followed by a Funeral Mass Celebrating Joe’s Eternal Life in Saint Athanasius Church, 300 Haverhill Street Reading at 10:30am. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories with Joe’s Family on Thursday, September 5th from 5-8pm in the Funeral Home. Parking attendants and elevator are available. Interment Charles Lawn Memorial Park, Reading.
