Cappy Popp BOLT Candidacy Announcement

The following candidacy statement is for the local Reading Election of April 4, 2023

As a candidate for the Reading Library Board of Trustees seat and current Reading Town Meeting member, I am committed to promoting access to knowledge, education, and cultural enrichment for all members of the Reading community. I believe that the Reading Public Library is a vital public institution that plays a crucial role in supporting intellectual freedom, fostering civic engagement, and enhancing the quality of life in our town.

I believe that access to information and knowledge is a fundamental right that should be available to all, regardless of socioeconomic status or background. I will work to ensure that our library is fully funded and staffed with resources that meet the needs of all members of our community. I will support programs and initiatives promoting literacy, critical thinking, and digital literacy so that everyone can navigate an increasingly complex and data-centric world.

In addition, I believe that the library should be a safe and welcoming space for everyone, including marginalized and underrepresented groups. I will work to ensure that the library is an inclusive and diverse space that reflects the values and needs of our community. This includes providing resources and programming that address the unique needs of different groups, such as immigrants, people with disabilities, and other marginalized individuals.

Finally, I believe that the library plays an important role in promoting civic engagement and community building. I will work to foster partnerships between the library and other organizations in our city, such as schools, community centers, our senior center, and non-profits, to promote intergenerational collaboration and resource sharing. By working together, we can ensure that our community is vibrant, connected, and engaged.

As a member of your Library Board of Trustees, I will bring a moderate perspective and a commitment to strengthening our library and the vibrant Reading community it supports. I look forward to further serving our community and working together to create a more equitable future for all.

Sincerely,

Christian (Cappy) Popp
