Yet we also exist within a world of overwhelming digital content that contorts ideas and imagination into bite-size nuggets that are rarely insightful or useful. Journaling is a creative and therapeutic hobby that allows for deep expression and rewarding escape—and all you need is a pen\, some paper\, and the great outdoors. \nIn this 90-minute workshop\, local author Jason M. Rubin will guide participants in expressing themselves in writing and immersing themselves in nature as a means of promoting self-communication and self-healing. DESCRIPTION:July 1 event will feature a public reading and discussion of “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” as part of the statewide Reading Frederick Douglass Together program supported by Mass Humanities\nReading Public Library (RPL)\, Reading\, MA — Community members in Reading will gather on Wednesday\, July 1\, at 6:30 p.m. for a public reading and facilitated discussion of Frederick Douglass’s landmark 1852 speech\, “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” \nThe event is supported by The Friends of Reading Public Library and Mass Humanities through its Reading Frederick Douglass Together (RFDT) grant program. This year\, the grant will fund 76 readings across the Commonwealth. If you are interested in participating in the reading\, please contact Jocelyn Gould at jgould@noblenet.org for more information. \nFirst delivered in 1852 at Corinthian Hall in Rochester\, New York\, Douglass’s speech remains one of the most powerful reflections on American democracy\, freedom\, and racial justice. \n“As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary\, Mass Humanities encourages people of every age\, background\, and experience in cities and towns across Massachusetts to gather\, to commemorate\, question\, and recommit to the promises made in 1776\,” said Brian Boyles\, Executive Director of Mass Humanities. \nSince the first Reading Frederick Douglass Together event was held on the Boston Common in 2009\, the program has grown into a statewide civic tradition. In 2025 alone\, with $130\,000 in grant support from Mass Humanities\, more than 8\,000 children and adults attended 71 public readings in 48 municipalities in every corner of the state. \n“These readings give everyone in our community—residents\, students\, organizations—a chance to sit with Douglass’s words and reflect on why they still matter\, more than 170 years later\,” said Reading Public Library Director Amy Lannon. “That’s what libraries are here for\, and we’re proud to bring this experience to Reading.” \nRFDT events have been staged by a diverse group of organizations across the Commonwealth\, from museums and historical societies to social justice organizations\, social service providers\, elementary and high schools\, colleges\, universities\, and houses of worship. SUMMARY:Scottish Prisoners of War in Reading During the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Reading Public Library hosts historian Christopher Hall for a deep dive into the capture and imprisonment of Highland soldiers in 1776 Massachusetts\nReading\, MA —  Join the Reading Public Library and Reading Antiquarian Society as Chris Hall presents his talk on Scottish Prisoners of War in Reading and Beyond During the American Revolution. \nIn June 1776\, the 71st Regiment of Foot\, British Army soldiers from the highlands of Scotland\, were captured by American privateers in Boston Harbor. The regiment\, along with their families\, servants\, and families of their servants\, were imprisoned and paroled across Massachusetts. The Lieutenant Colonel of this regiment\, Archibald Campbell\, was paroled at the Parker Tavern in Reading\, and his Officers were paroled in an encampment nearby. This talk will investigate the contextual wartime dynamic during which this regiment was kept as prisoners of war\, and the effect it had on Patriots\, Loyalists\, and everyday people in Reading and across Massachusetts. \nThe program will begin at 1:30 on May 2 at Reading Public Library in the A/B conference room\, but come early to mingle with other history buffs! \nChristopher Hall\, the caretaker at Parker Tavern\, will give the talk. He also works in other capacities for the National Park Service as a historical interpreter in Boston.

He has authored numerous research articles and presentations on the American Revolution\, including the experiences of New England and New York loyalist refugees during the Burgoyne Campaign. In addition\, he has published two books: We Stood Our Ground: Lexington in the First Year of the American Revolution and I See Nothing but the Horrors of a Civil War: The Loyalists of McAlpin’s Corps of American Volunteers.
